Crimson lips, oxblood nails and barely there brows and lashes are the perfect backdrop for one of Fall 2012′s biggest fashion trends: the dark heroine. Inspired by characters like Lisbeth Salander, Morticia Addams and even Snow White (likely of the Kristen Stewart variety), the look took hold at shows as different as Gucci and Viktor & Rolf, transforming models into vampiric goddesses at each show. Nail Corner: How to do the dripping oxblood nail art from Prabal Gurung Spring 2013 | Hollywood yohana

Oxblood is certainly the colour of the season and from what we’ve seen so far at New York Fashion Week it’s still going strong for Spring 2013. And, like many colour/fashion/beauty trends it’s a shade that’s been in the spotlight before. Deep red lipstick definitely had its moment in the mid-’90s (hello, Drew Barrymore!) and I distinctly remember being obsessed with a special edition bottle of Wet n Wild nail polish that was a rich oxblood shade. (It was 1996 and interesting nail polish colours generally only came out in time for Halloween.) Fun fact: After painting it on, my dad commented that the nail polish make it look like I’d bashed my fingers with a hammer—which obviously made the oxblood colour seem that much cooler. Needless to say, I’m eager to see what he thinks about this actually bloody nail art. Based off the manicure from Prabal Gurung Spring 2013, I’ve been obsessed with it ever since our beauty editor Sarah Daniel snapped a picture of it last week while backstage. It’s quite the literal take on the oxblood trend and also a pretty impressive nail art design in its own right. Grab a deep shade of red nail polish, a dotting tool and a tiny brush and get started!

The Toronto Film Festival is almost upon us, meaning much of the city is in a state of primping and prepping, as one of the best thing about TIFF is that there’s always the chance you’ll find yourself on a red carpet or at a party with A-list stars. Of course, a little bit of wishful thinking can help secure even the most stringent of invites—so why not show how party-ready you are with a sparkling manicure? Featuring a chunky, multi-coloured glitter OPI nail polish and show-stopping Make Up For Ever gemstones, there’s enough bling in this manicure to last the entire festival.

Nail Corner: Bright floral nail art inspired by Temperley London | Hollywood yohana

Considering just how much Temperley London was worn by Kate Middleton during her recent Diamond Jubilee tour of Southeast Asia, the label was top of mind when it came time to seek out this week’s nail art inspiration. It also helps that Temperley London’s Fall 2012 collection opened with an exquisite embroidered dress (worn by former FASHION cover girl Anais Pouliot, no less) that was basically begging the nail art treatment. For this design you’ll need a handful of colourful nail polishes, as it’s all about the contrast between the light-taupe background and the floral detail work. (I almost wish there had been more need for the dark, hunter-green shade I used, which was one of the Nars Andy Warhol polishes. It will certainly make a reappearance!) London Fashion Week Spring 2013 backstage beauty: Magenta lips, inky eyes and more from our top 5 makeup looks | Hollywood yohana

All eyes are on Milan now, but let’s not forget some of London Fashion Week Spring 2013’s best in beauty. Most refreshing was the influx of bright lips, an area of the face that didn’t get a lot of play at New York Fashion Week, where the general trend was minimal makeup and manicures—nude polish dominated as did completely bare, buffed-to-shine nails. In fact, backstage in the Big Apple makeup artists often skipped putting pigment on the mouth entirely opting for clear gloss. (One of a few notable exceptions, the matte raspberry lip at Jason Wu was awesome.) When they did pull out the colour, they applied it to the top half of the face: take Dick Page’s green and blue over-the-eye arches at Michael Kors, and Tom Pecheux’s abstract smears on lids at Peter Som. But, where New York left us wanting for bold, colourful lips, London made up for it in spades. Even bare-face-loving Burberry Prorsum busted out the rouge lipstick, hopefully a sign that lips won’t be silenced from here on out.

London Fashion Week Spring 2013 Street Style: Cozy knits, leather jackets, animal print sweaters and we spy Olivia Palermo! | Hollywood yohana

With the weather rapidly cooling down it’s no surprise how many cozy knits, leather jackets and tailored pants appear in today’s batch of street style pictures from London Fashion Week Spring 2013. Houndstooth print paired with black tights and a bright red sweater brought elegance to the streets, while ripped jeans and fur vests were prominent visions and gave an edgy vibe to otherwise dressy attire. Black and white was also big—clearly colour palettes have toned down as the transition into fall officially begins—as were animal prints embroidered onto sweaters. (Part Givenchy panther, part Opening Ceremony kitty?) The biggest trend we spotted, however, goes to knits—a fall favourite for many. Knitted hats, sweaters and skirts in assorted patterns graced the streets of London, as well as our Fall & Winter 2012 trend guide. Olivia Palermo did knits differently, by pairing a cozy grey sweater with a textured leather skirt and lots of chunky jewelry. And while we may be at the end of London Fashion Week Spring 2013, there are many more street style pictures to come—after all, it’s time for Milan!

Milan Fashion Week Spring 2013 Street Style: 20 shots of cat sweaters, houndstooth, polka dots galore! | Hollywood yohana

And we’re in Milan! Alongside Zeina Esmail who will be covering for us from inside the shows, our resident street style photographer, Stefania Yarhi, has hopped a plane from London and headed to Northern Italy to start snapping the best looks from Milan Fashion Week Spring 2013.
As predicted, we spotted yet another Balenciaga sci-fi sweater (might as well make your own) and Vogue Japan editor, Anna Dello Russo, decked out in red with a peplum and zebra bangle.

It seems as though everyone in Milan is wearing prints—and multiple prints at once. Whether it was a cat sweater, houndstooth, or polka dots, street stylers were wearing it. The shining example of wearing prints goes to the blue power suit covered in pandas.
We spotted model Joan Smalls with a studded collar popping out from under her cropped sweater and Hanne-Gaby Odiele pretending it’s summer yet again, in a low cut printed dress. The women in Milan were paying attention to their necklines and made sure to accessorize their collars with metal tips or a chain tucked under. And if they weren’t wearing a collar, there was a statement necklace set in place.

Milan Fashion Week Spring 2013: The top 5 collections so far (plus, why Francesco Scognamiglio is the next big thing) | Hollywood yohana

By far my favourite of day one (Sorry Frida), Francesco Scognamiglio’s dreamy, forward thinking collection is just more proof that this industry-loved label is going to make it to the big time. Models strutted down the runway with what looked like Swarovski 3D “flock of bird” brooches placed in unexpected yet intentional places overtop gowns and metal mesh blouses. White ruled the runway for the first half of the show, followed by powder blues and black.
