There are fashionistas—and then there are fash-shoe-nistas. This one goes out to the latter. The brave soles souls who risk making it onto somebody's worst dressed list (not that you should care what anyone thinks—if you love it,
rock it!) all for the sake of putting their most avant-garde foot forward. Sometimes the unusual footwear is fierce, but most of the time, it's just freakish. Either way, it gives the rest of us something awesome to talk about. What girl doesn't love shoes? With that said, let's get to talkin' about what we consider to be the top five outrageous designer heels of 2011.
Alain Quilici's "Payson" Skate Lace-Up Bootie ($1,180)
First up, Alain Quilici's "Payson" heels, as spotted on
Beyoncé earlier this month in Manhattan. It's not so much that they look like a combat boot, pump and ice skate had a ménage à trois that gives us pause for concern. (By the way, why weren't we invited to that?!) It's more so the fact that they're being worn by a six-months-pregnant woman who's on her way to a meeting. Shouldn't she be kicking off her heels instead of kicking them up five inches off the ground and going to work?
Alana Hale Lace Winged Wedges (custom)
What's a thousand times more puzzling than that are Alana Hale's gold lace doily-and-pearl-covered peep-toe wedges. We scratched our heads when we saw R&B singer
Keri Hilson flaunting them on the 16th Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards red carpet in L.A. back in January. The tacky design looks like something a crazy old bag lady would wear and, yet, the shoe looks like it could have easily been hot glued together by a third grader in art class. Not exactly the type of leg-lengthener a pretty girl such as Keri should rock.
Believe it or not, there is a bright side to all of this. The shoes were custom made. So, we won't see anyone else sporting the hideous footwear again...
we hope!
Giuseppe Zanotti African-Inspired Curved-Wedged Bootie ($895)
An extraordinary wedge that we did salivate over this year was Giuseppe Zanotti's heel-less ethnic wonder, which
X-Factor's
Nicole Scherzinger wore while out and about in London several weeks ago.
Kelly Rowland also wore the eye candy for a photo shoot. As you know, Kels is a judge on the UK version of
X-Factor. Noticing a pattern here? We do! The Giuseppes definitely have
it.
We're a sucker for a good tribal piece. Plus, their nude so they'll make your legs look killer. Mind you, we don't actually have any experience walking in heel-less shoes, but, in a perfect world, we'd turn the sidewalk into our own personal runway with these babies!
Christian Louboutin's "Alex" Lion Paw Pumps ($4,995)
From an African-inspired shoe to one that resembles
he king of the jungle. That's right, move over Alexander McQueen 12-inch Armadillo heels. You're so last year! Christian Louboutin is proving he's the shoe world's current top cat with his "Alex" lion paw pumps.
The bizarre breed of stilettos was first seen on
Sarah Jessica Parker while promoting
I Don't Know How She Does It in Moscow in August. Then,
Blake Lively took a walk on the wild side in the roaring-red soles on the set of
Gossip Girl this month. Interestingly enough, the actresses both complemented the furry four-legged theme in their own quirky and unique way. SJP rocked a
Little Red Riding Hood-esque Giambattista Valli caped gown, which brought to mind the Big Bad Wolf, while Blake toted her adorable Maltipoo named Penny. So, how do we feel about the clawed design? Let's just say we prefer showing off our pedi in a pair of open-toed shoes!
Christian Louboutin Gravity-Defying Ballet Heels (priced undisclosed)
As much as the aforementioned celebs love to rock the boldest footwear, none of them dared to slip on our No. 1 outrageous shoe of the year: Christian Louboutin's jaw-dropping 8-inch ballet stilletos. Doesn't it hurt your feet just looking at them?! The one-of-a-kind, Swarovski-encrusted pair was auctioned off at the English National Ballet's Summer Party in London. Something tells us the highest bidder has the ankle-twisters in a well-lit display case—
not their shoe closet!
