Introduce Collection "Resort Wear" Islami in Bali

The concept of Muslim clothing with a modern touch of designer creativity, and suitable for use as resort wear, introduced in Bali through the arena Islamic Fashion Festival (IFF) in 2012. IFF targeting Bali as a place of Moslem fashion show designer Indonesia, Malaysia, and foreign designers who live in Bali.

"The majority of non-Muslims who come as well. It's a good sign there is still room for understanding the Muslim world. Designers involved non-Muslims who also want to ponder over the beautiful Muslim fashion," he explained.

IFF 2012 introduced Moslem and Moslem outfit inspired a number of designer creations. Paul ROPP featured as the opening presents a collection titled "Absolute Dazzling". Untuk kali pertama, Bali dipilih sebagai kota tujuan di Indonesia melanjuti IFF yang pernah berlangsung di Jakarta sebanyak empat kali, dan sekali di Bandung pada 2011.

Terpilihnya Bali sebagai tempat pelaksanaan IFF 2012 bukan tanpa sebab. Selain cocok dengan konsep busana yang mengangkat tema resort wear, Bali juga menjadi tempat yang tepat untuk mengenalkan busana muslim pada masyarakat dunia. Melalui busana yang mencerminkan kelembutan, kehangatan, dan keberagaman gaya penampilan kaum muslim, diharapkan masyarakat dunia punya gambaran berbeda tentang muslim dan dunianya.
"Mayoritas yang datang juga bukan muslim. Ini pertanda baik masih ada ruang untuk memahami dunia muslim. Desainer non muslim yang terlibat juga mau memikirkan secara mendalam busana muslim yang cantik," jelasnya.
IFF 2012 mengenalkan busana muslim dan busana yang terinspirasi busana muslim kreasi sejumlah perancang. Paul Ropp tampil sebagai pembuka menghadirkan koleksi bertema "Absolute Dazzling". Koleksi busana muslimnya lebih tertutup dibandingkan rancangan pertamanya pada pelaksanaan IFF 2011 di Bandung lalu. Ropp yang terbiasa merancang busana serba terbuka, nyatanya mampu menerjemahkan konsep busana muslim pada kreasi terbarunya untuk IFF 2012 ini.
Desainer Malaysia, Dato Farah Khan, dengan koleksi Isola menghadirkan busana model kaftan dengan motif animal print, juga motif yang terinspirasi dari hutan, burung, dan alam terbuka dari tujuh pulau favoritnya, termasuk Bali. Busana longgar ringan dan berukuran panjang ini merepresentasikan tujuh pulau, termasuk dalam pemilihan warna yang didominasi putih, hijau, biru. Bahan double crepe dipilih untuk koleksi busana kasual harian ini.
Farah mengaku belum pernah merancang busana muslim. Koleksi Farah pada umumnya lebih menyasar kalangan selebriti. Keterlibatannya di IFF 2012 merupakan tantangan baginya, menghasilkan koleksi yang menonjolkan kesederhanaan dengan sentuhan modern, sekaligus ingin memberikan pilihan berbusana muslim menggunakan kreasinya.
"Busana yang saya buat bisa dipakai sebagai busana muslim, namun juga bisa dipakai siapa saja dengan berbagai cara. Kalau ingin memakainya sebagai busana muslim, tambahkan kerudung, namun bisa juga dipakai untuk keseharian dengan berbagai gaya penampilan, bagi siapa saja," jelasnya.

Topknots⎯the unofficial hairstyle of last summer⎯are alive and kickin’. It’s perched high on the head of the Pink Tartan lady for fall 2011 to be exact. “There’s lots of military pieces, so we wanted a hard/soft aspect to the woman,” explained L’Oreal Paris’ Lead Hair Artist Eric del Monaco. After spritzing hair with water, he made a high pony, split it into two sections and twisted one into a loop and wrapped the other one around the base. Creative director Veronica Chu called the style “organized chaos” saying it was “contained and controlled”. Surely the inescapable mist of Elnett that seemed to hang in a cloud over the area ensured that. Lead Makeup Artist Eddie Malter gave models a hard edge with a dramatic dark eye done in black shadow that extended out and was purposely done not to look “clean” and avoided mascara altogether. He used his backstage MVP product, Wear Infinite Eye Shadow in “Morning Light” to add highlights down the nose and on cheekbones and took down brows and lips with a bit of concealer. The final touch was gloss added to the lids right before the girls took to the runway.

Largely unseen by the audience, the nails at Pink Tartan were the piece de resistance. Leeanne Colley of Tips Nail Bar applied two coats of CND’s “Hide in the Dark” a sparkly charcoal grey. On top of that she layered 3-4 bits of cut up plastic nails that had been dipped in a concoction of OPI‘s “Lucerne-tainly Look Marvelous” diluted with topcoat. The end result looked like shards of glass stuck to each nail bed.

Instead of the traditional army of models bearing the same look, three distinct personalities walked the runway at Greta Constantine on Friday night.
Mlle: M.A.C senior artist Melissa Gibson described this look as a “throwback to the strong, chic French woman.” Lids were blended with a mix of Paint Pot in “Soft Ochre” and Eye Shadow in “Saddle” to “add dimension, not colour”. Mascara was nixed so that the inner portion of the eye, including the lash line, was kept light. “It still makes the eyes stand out, but more like a painting. It’s very haunting.” And no Frenchie is complete without her red lipstick—this one was blackened for “depth” using Lip Pencil in “Cherry” and “Nightmoth” and Cremesheen Lipstick in “Hang Up”. Hair was “sleek and sophisticated,” according to Adrian Carew from Hair2inc., resulting in either smooth, side-parted low ponytails or a side chignon made up of intricate waves and curls.

Lezark: This minimalist look was a direct reference to babealicious MisShapes DJ and occasional model Leigh Lezark, with thick black eyeliner rimming the eyes on top and bottom—but not meeting at the corners. Skin was flawlessly buffed with M.A.C Mineralize Skinfinish, Slimshine Lipstick in “Bare” was topped with Viva Glam V Lipglass and brows were filled in where needed to complete the simple, groomed look. Hair was blown-dry perfectly straight and smooth.
Richie: These socialite bad girls wore layers of black upon black around their eyes in an egg shape that was meant to be “moving,” so that it appeared imperfect and slept in, said Gibson. The models wore Mineralize Skinfinish in a half shade darker than their skin, so that the face “doesn’t look blank.” Gibson skipped the blush and used “Peachstock” lipstick on the mouth—a shade she described as a nude, but with “more of a salmon undertone.” Hair was a mass of messy waves and curls, twisted and backcombed to party animal effect.

Art: How luminescence is lighting up both art and fashion



The art world—much like the fashion world—loves to redefine colour every chance it gets. Recently, a new batch of materials and technologies has enabled artists and designers to work with exquisite light-infused hues, ranging from peek-a-boo prismatics to sizzling minerals and gleaming metallics.


Iridescence, for example, can be seen in both cutting-edge exhibits and the latest fashion collections. A visual property of mother-of-pearl and moonstones, oil slicks, alloys and minerals, iridescence occurs when light plays over micro-grooved surfaces and separates into prismatic colours. For a visual cue, see photos of Carey Mulligan at this year’s Met Ball: her scaled Prada halter dress, made entirely of metal paillettes, reflected a different spectrum of hues in nearly every red carpet shot.
One artist leading the way with iridescent materials, especially when it comes to the mineral and fluorescent ranges, is Anselm Reyle. The German painter and sculptor’s body of work includes large striped canvases covered in PVC foil and glitter, LED- and neon-light sculptures, and huge assemblages of crumpled foil. Reyle has devoted the past two years to designing accessories for Christian Dior; among the most spectacular of his prototypes are plum-coloured metallic leather bags with quilted neon-yellow topstitching. “A number of people from the [fashion] industry had been collecting my [art] work,” he says, explaining his transition from art studio to atelier. “It was appealing because of my focus on texture, colours and materiality.”
In London, Central Saint Martins fashion design graduate Crimson Rose O’Shea is following a similar route. She pleats transparent iridescent foil into artful objects and costumes that look like glossy, operatic neo-Elizabethan neck ruffs and underskirts.
Always in flux, iridescence is glimpsed rather than seen. In Saskatoon, artist Marie Lannoo creates achingly beautiful prismatic foil wall-works and installations in which the colour appears to “turn on” when you look at them. In a collaboration with scientists at the University of Saskatchewan, Lannoo created new colour and light effects with high-tech prismatic foils. “I’m interested in enlarging the dimensional aspect of colour,” she says.

he optical or illusionistic possibilities of holographic foils are being ironically explored by 40-year-old Toronto artist Sandy Plotnikoff. Known for crafting tinsel-bright renderings of loosely daubed brush marks, he uses pink, green and gold foils—which can be bought by the yard from novelty manufacturers—to send up high art abstract-expressionist painting. The result is a group of works that brighten up as a slew of bonbon wrappers would if they were strobe-lit with halogen light bulbs.
Toronto artist Joseph Drapell places his reflective messages in various opalescent abstract paintings. His pieces often provide the viewer with high impact colour like gleaming greens and glinting reds. Some of his most gorgeous pieces take metallic and luminous pigment effects to new heights. Their brilliance is achieved with a variety of tools. Drapell applies swaths of paint in wildly varying viscosities, using raking devices or a squeegee to create light-refracting grooves. Ravishing molten abstracts result, such as his four-foot-square Mirror of Music (2012): actual multicoloured glitter lies beneath translucent layers of midnight blue, azure and violet, interrupted by orange-copper and blue-violet swirls. His newer hues recall those seen in Hubble telescope images of nebulae, galaxies and other cosmic wonders.
Alberta-born artist Christian Eckart, now based in Houston, produces fractal-based paintings and sculptures that would not be amiss on the set of Doctor Who. Made up of triangle-shaped glass panels cobbled together like facets of a quartz crystal, Eckart’s 2011 free-floating, 10-metre-long Glass Hexagonal Perturbation—“Hive Brane” (short for “membrane”) evokes sublime luminosity in the east lobby of the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute of St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. Eckart’s reputation, however, is based on his ongoing series Curved Monochrome Paintings, which are shiny, shield-like aluminum sculptures coated with automotive lacquer in pearlescent colours such as pink-lavender and blue-gold. Looking into their highly reflective depths, you see yourself and the space around you awash in vibrant harmonic colour. However, one of the world’s tallest examples of luminescence is Toronto’s brightly LED-ed CN Tower. It glows over the city in remarkable nü-hues after dark and changes its canvas with vibrant bursts of light.
This growing focus on iridescence may be telling us something. We are in a post-millennial moment when messages of importance must sparkle in order to make us look away from the dazzle of our iPhone screens and take notice. Perhaps this new luminosity is the next chapter in the evolution of colour and a sign about the future of the gallery wall—that it will keep reflecting the sheen for as long as we need it to.

Due to the promise of costumes by Rodarte, Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan has been pegged as a fashion film, with a more highly-anticipated red carpet than your average flick. The film’s three female stars–Natalie Portman, Winona Ryder and Mila Kunis–hit the premiere last night in New York. Portman wore a black Christian Dior gown, Kunis sported a bombshell Elie Saab, while Ryder jumped on the menswear bandwagon. Who made the best entrance?
