Ask Style: Why Is New York Fashion Week a Big Deal? | Hollywood yohana

Fashion and beauty trends may seem to just come out of the blue—without warning everyone's sporting cut-outs(we're looking at you, Rooney Mara) ordip-dyeing their hair (Selena Gomez hit the dye most recently). We know these fads appear to be the random whims of the Fashion Gods, but they're actually born on the runway at fashion weeks around the world. With the madness of New York Fashion Week descending upon us in a hot minute (check back herefor complete coverage!), there's no better time to take an interest in the designs that you will be wearing for the next season. After all, we all like to be ahead of the fashion curve!
Believe it or not, there's a reason behind all the brouhaha at Lincoln Center, even if you're not getting anywhere near those mythical runways. New York Fashion Week is where all the trends of the season begin. You can think of it as a sort of fashion headwaters, and it's from that high and pure water source that come all the beauty and fashion fads you'll be wearing in a few months.
Need a few examples? You know how nail art is all the rage these days? That trend was predicted a whole six months ago when models on the runways of Pamela Love, Jen Kao and Alice + Olivia had tricked-out manicures for Spring 2012. If you followed the shows, you were probably the first of your friends with funky nail designs. As for clothes, it was back in September when the runways dictated that shorts suits would be hot. That same trend was spotted on three celebs in the past month alone!
See, the funny thing about fashion shows is that they're always a season ahead of real life. Even though we're dreaming about what we'll wear for spring now, the shows coming up in few days will be debuting clothes for fall 2012. This would be slightly annoying, except for the fact that it gives us a killer chance to get a sneak peek of what to expect for the next season. We can start stalking key pieces online and get a leg-up on all the hottest trends before they hit Forever 21. It also gives us plenty of time to figure out how to adapt the crazy runway creations into wearable iterations for real life.
