Introducing the OPI Euro Centrale collection: See all 12 OPI nail polish colours for Spring 2013 | Hollywood yohana

OPI Euro Centrale collection Spring 2013 nail polish

Even though the holiday season has just begun and we’re in the middle of obsessing over festive winter shades of nail polish, OPI has just announced the launch of its Spring/Summer 2013 collection.
Euro Centrale by OPI features twelve new nail polish colours that are classic, yet contemporary and are inspired by four major European countries. And despite being the OPI Spring 2013 collection, Euro Centrale will hit counters before the snow thaws, in February 2013.
Romania, Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic influenced the newest collection, and were chosen because they each have an aesthetically pleasing way of mixing old with new.

“When visiting these countries, you’ll view Gothic churches alongside vibrant graffiti murals, blending two very different aesthetics. This fusion of old and new was also seen in runway looks during New York Fashion Week, where classic styles were reinvented with modern silhouettes and patterns,” explained OPI executive VP Suzi Weiss-Fischmann via press release.
Of course, it wouldn’t be an OPI collection without some memorable nail polish names. This time around you can choose from gems like “My Paprika is Hotter than Yours!,” “You’re Such a BudaPest” and “Can’t Find My Czechbook”—a fiery orange-red, a pale lavendar and a gorgeous aqua polish, respectively. We’ll be sure to break out our own Czechbook once the OPI Euro Centrale collection hits stores next year!

Introducing Mariah Carey by OPI: See all 8 nail polish colours from the very glittery collection | Hollywood yohana

Mariah Carey OPI Nail Polish Opener

Mariah Carey was the star of a movie titled Glitter for a reason. So when it was announced that she would be partnering with OPI and releasing a collection of nail polishes in January 2013, we expected a whole lot of glitz with a dash of glamour. And guess what, we were right.
The collection’s eight colours range from pale-pink to an almost-black with red flecks of sparkle—perhaps each an ode to the diva’s singing range? There are four shades that use OPI’s newest nail polish innovation, Liquid Sand. The new nail polish technology provides a textured matte finish that is infused with reflective sparkles. This is the first time OPI has debuted its Liquid Sand nail polish and Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI executive VP and artistic director, said the polish is “worthy of a superstar” in a press release.

While we’re all over the glitter and shine of the Mariah Carey by OPI collection, we’re sad that our favourite songs didn’t make the cut when it came to naming each nail polish. We were hoping for a nod or two at Mariah’s past hits (and our favourites!) like “Heartbreaker” and “Honey,” but instead more obscure songs seem to have made the cut—such as the bold blue Liquid Sand polish dubbed “Get Your Number.” There is one small throwback to 1997, though, with a Champagne-pink polish called “A Butterfly Moment.”
We’re particularly intrigued by the concept of Liquid Sand and can’t wait to give these textured matte polishes a whirl once they hit stores in January 2013. What more can we say? The Mariah Carey by OPI nail polish collection is certainly a line of colours that we’ll keep on coming back to incessantly.

Katy Perry is expanding her beauty brand with a new line of fragrances| Hollywood yohana

Katy Perry Fragrances Coty

If Katy Perry’s self-proclaimed fall from cloud nine is an example of anything, it’s that the pop star knows how to hit the ground running. Her summer 3D movie Katy Perry: Part of Me was a box-office hit and every single released by the singer has become an instant chart topper. Now, Katy Perry is continuing with her fragrance line but going bigger and bolder.
Today it was announced that Katy Perry has signed a contract with Coty Inc.—the global beauty manufacturer that has brands such as OPI, Marc Jacobs and Rimmel in its portfolio—to distribute her two existing perfumes (Meow! and Purr) and work alongside as she develops her third signature scent. “I’m excited to share what’s next in my perfumed world,” she said via press release.

It comes without surprise that the pop star is expanding her beauty brand and working on more scents—after all, Katy Perry has become somewhat of a style icon in the music world. Her constantly changing hair colour is always making news, she recently launched a collection of false eyelashes inspired by her own enviable set and her nails are always decked out in a cute, custom nail art design.
If we could take a guess at anything, it’s that Katy Perry’s next perfume will also have a cat-themed name and it will be as sweet as can be due to her penchant for treats (cupcake bras, oversized lollipops, etc). But will no release date set for the third scent, all we can do is speculate.

Pavoni hits the big time: Mariah Carey dons the Canadian label to the annual Rockafeller Center Christmas tree lighting| Hollywood yohana

Mariah Carey Rockafeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting

Only a couple of truly glitzy gowns could upstage someone as famous as Santa Claus, but last night, during NBC’s Rockefeller Centre’s lighting of the Christmas tree, that’s precisely what happened. Mariah Carey quite literally sparkled quite in two different bedazzled Pavoni gowns, shining more light on the Canadian brand’s ever-growing popularity with celebrities.
Since its inception, Pavoni has slowly worked its way up the celebrity ranks. And what started as just dressing Canadian stars turned into dressing household names like Katy Perry, Carrie Underwood , Kylie Minogue and even Shakira.

Childhood friends from Montreal, Gianni Falcone and Mike Derderian, dressed Mariah Carey in a short red tulle dress that had a plunging (and we mean plunging) neckline with over-the-top embellishments and followed up that look up with a custom floor-length silver gown, which had sparkly crystals hand sewn on with sheer detailing. The two gowns had over-the-top glitter and glamour.
Now that Mariah Carey has been added to the list of celebrities that Pavoni has worked with, we’re curious to see if we’ll be watching some embellished Canadian-designed gowns walking down the red carpets of the Golden Globes, Academy Awards or even the Grammys. And due to Pavoni’s recent popularity with celebrities, we’re thinking all signs point to yes.

Alexander Wang to Balenciaga? The latest from the post-Ghesquière rumour mill | Hollywood yohana

Alexander Wang For Balenciaga

The rumour mill has steadily been churning since the announcement of Nicolas Ghesquière’s departure from Balenciaga. Effective tomorrow, the seat of the creative director will officially be vacant, but as of today it seems that Alexander Wang has pulled ahead of the bunch and is the front-runner for the position.
According to the French newspaper, Nouvel Observator, Wang has emerged as the shoo-in for the job, and this statement was followed up by, New York Times writer, Cathy Horyn—who was one of the first to break the news about Ghesquiere’s departure—in an article that said the announcement of Wang’s new role at Balenciaga could come as early as next week.

The news of Alexander Wang as the successor of Balenciaga comes as a slight surprise given the nature of recent rumours. Many sources were almost certain it would be Scottish designer Christopher Kane to take over at Balenciaga. It seemed almost too convenient when Kane left Versace’s younger brand, Versus last week, and somewhat fishy when it was reported that Kane was in talks with PPR (which owns Balenciaga) about getting financial backing for his eponymous label.
This month has become an emotional rollercoaster because of Balenciaga. We felt sadness when it was announced that Nicolas Ghesquière was leaving, excitement with every new rumour, and now, we are growing impatient to learn who’s next. Please let this be settled before 2013!

H&M Spring 2013 look book: Your new dream wardrobe in 33 photos | Hollywood yohana

HM Spring 2013

With less than a week to go before we can get our paws on the Maison Martin Margiela for H&M collaboration, the Swedish mega-brand has given us another reason to drool, and this time it’s the Spring 2013 collection. The latest from the brand is a western inspired extremely embellished (and affordable as always) collection of mini skirts, leather jackets, and baseball caps.

Taking some serious inspiration from the Spring 2013 runways, there are references to the Wild Wild West, as we saw at Derek Lam as well as fruity pineapple accents like we saw on the Moschino Cheap & Chic runway. But we’ll never complain about be able to afford a designer inspired piece and that’s what makes H&M so perfect for the mandatory wardrobe update when spring hits.
The has has given tried and tested pieces like the leather mini and pencil skirt a whole new life by adding embellished leather accents and long tassels to step up the basics’ game. Entire monochromatic looks in red and black fit in perfectly for spring (case in point: we saw one colour looks day after day during fashion month), and turquoise stone bolo ties make us excited to embrace our inner cowgirl as soon as the snow melts away.

Gap Holiday Campaign 2012: Michael J. Fox, Aubrey Plaza, Rufus Wainwright and others showcase that love comes in every shade (of cozy knits) | Hollywood yohana

Gap Holiday Campaign 2012

It isn’t a true holiday season until you’re bundled in cozy knit mittens, toques and layered sweaters. Or at least, that’s what the latest Gap holiday campaign 2012 proves to us. In keeping with the tradition of having A+ holiday ads (remember the year of Love Train?) the American company has taken portraits of celebrities in colourful knitted goods.
The campaign is titled “Love Comes in Every Shade” and aims to show a-typical relationships and the many forms of love ranging from puppy love, best friend love and even regular ole romantic love. From rapper Nas in a puffy vest with his dad showing off fatherly love to Rufus Wainwright in khakis alongside his husband Jörn Weisbrodt being the example of wedded bliss.

Other celebrities included are Michael J. Fox and wife Tracy Pollan, The Atomics, and British actor Jack Huston (with his cute dog!). The holiday collection features two-tone leather gloves, bright pants are colour blocked with classic V-neck sweaters, and fitted boyfriend shirts—all playing into Gap’s classic prep school vibe.
While the holidays may technically be over a month away, the Gap holiday campaign 2012 has us convinced it’s time to hop aboard the holiday train and we won’t be getting off until 2013.

Christopher Kane to leave Versus. Could it be for Balenciaga? | Hollywood yohana

Christopher Kane to leave Versus

Just weeks after news broke that Nicholas Ghesquière was leaving Balenciaga, Christopher Kane is doing the same with his role at Versus.
While busy designing his namesake line, Christopher Kane has been working at the helm of Versus, alongside Donatella Versace for the past six years. Today, the label announced a mutual separation agreement. Versus plans to slow down the production of its seasonal collections and focus more on the digital aspect of the brand, with Donatella Versace designing the label with help from young designers and stylists.
About his departure from Versus, Kane said, “the time has come to dedicate all my focus to the future of the Christopher Kane label.” Or could he mean Balenciaga?

On Saturday, reports were circulating that he had accepted the newly vacant position at the French house, however a spokesperson for Kane was quick to dispel them today by saying, “Rumors surrounding Christopher Kane’s appointment as creative director of Balenciaga are unfounded.”
We know that the team at Balenciaga has a shortlist of designers they’re looking at to take over the role (although they wouldn’t name any names), but Kane seems to be the one that continues to come up in the rumour mill. With Ghesquière’s last day at Balenciaga on November 30, and Kane just announcing his departure from Versus, it seems like more than just a coincidence to us.
At last report, Balenciaga is set to announce a successor to Ghesquière “as soon as we’re ready.” For now we’ll just have to wait impatiently and see what happens next.

Grey Cup-inspired MEN’S FASHION shoot: We prep for the football festivities the most fashionable way we know how | Hollywood yohana

Grey Cup-Inspired Fashion Shoot

There have been 99 years of touchdowns, tackles, and blitzes in the Canadian Football league, and this Sunday will make it 100. The 100-year anniversary of the Grey Cup will be heading to Toronto to host the final game of the CFL’s season and hometown team, the Toronto Argonauts, will be facing the Calgary Stampeders. While the two cities mayors may be placing bets on the winning team, we’re thinking about what to wear when watching.

Watching football may often include jerseys, face paint, and pom poms, but for our game day themed shoot for Fall issue of Men’s FASHION we were more intrigued by varsity jackets, heavy flannels, and chunky knits. Pieces that are a nod to athleticism that don’t literally say, ‘I’m watching a sporting event’. We saw designers like DSquared updating the varsity jacket and giving it a more fitted silhouette and athletic inspired bomber jackets from Jil Sander that updates a classic wardrobe staple.
If you’re a football fanatic who can’t wait until Sunday or a casual on looker from the sidelines (aka the food table at the viewing party), there’s a way to tackle the athletic trends without looking like a linebacker. A fashion touchdown, if you will.

CNTM Episode 2: You have the right to remain stylishly silent | Hollywood yohana

Nikita's winning shot

In this episode, we bone up on fashion law, see the girls play stylist and go on a trip to the AGO.
Awwww: The girls return to the penthouse to find Tiffany’s note, adorned with a single tear.
Anvil: They really made a point of showing what time the girls went to bed (3:00 a.m.) and when they planned to get up (10:30 a.m.), so of course Nolé arrives at, that’s right, 6:10 a.m. Ridiculous bonus: He’s dressed as a duty officer, and has come to “arrest” the girls.
Best bit of pantomime: The models arrive at a courthouse and Jay whips around, in high court drag, and informs them they’ve all “violated section J [of course!] 212 of the fashion code.” As we all know, section J212 states that “it is a Top Model’s supreme duty to look fffabulous at all times.” Oh my god.
Of course that means it’s makeover day! Widely recognized as one of the best episodes of any Top Model season. The girls are given looks inspired by style icons like Debbie Harry, Linda Evangelista and Agyness Deyn. “Sentenced!” Jay says. Indeed.
Best use of screeching car sounds: Nikita’s reveal. She looks like she’s going to puke upon seeing her Bettie-Page inspired blunt bangs. What she fails to realize is that she’ll now be a rockabilly icon. Jill doesn’t help things by delivering an oh so sincere, “You look great.”
The biggest change: Rebeccah seems really game for her Agyness Deyn cut, which I love because as my mom always says, “Hair grows.”
Seriously, get over it: Nikita continues to cry and complain about her hair. All night. The girls put a bowl on her head at one point, which is hilarious.
Best teenager moment: All the girls yelling at Ebonie to get off the phone.
Way to twist the knife: The contestants arrive at H&M for a “dressing yourself” challenge and Jay marvels at their makeovers. “Some tears? Some pain?” he asks in a way that is so “You cried right? I know you cried.” Amazing.
We want: to run around H&M trying on clothes right at the rack. (Those change room lines are a nightmare.)
Headslap: “Architect of style” and today’s guest judge June Ambrose announces, with no hint of irony, “The style Nazi’s here.” I swear to you I’ve never heard a fashion person talk like this. Though the looks on Jay’s and June’s faces upon seeing the outfits the girls came up with I am quite familiar with.
The winner: Rebeccah
The best use of a faux cryptic text message: “Modeling is a balancing act. Can you climb to the top & work your new look?” Gymnastics? Rock climbing? What could it be?
Finally: Male models, shirtless (do they come any other way?) and lolling on ladders at the Art Gallery of Ontario.
Best insider-ish thrill: Seeing all those runway looks on Canadian TV. Marni! Dries! Hooray!
Most comfortable in runway gear: Despite her whining, Nikita and her angular bangs look amazing with the super sharp Dolce & Gabbana shoulders. Maryam also looks fantastic and apparently gives “exotic poses.”
Most awkward: It’s a tie between Tara, who looks like she’s being eaten by that Marni, and Jill, who keeps making Nolé laugh with her facial expressions, which is perhaps not what we’re going for here.
Most existential judging question: Yasmin to Rebeccah re: her Twiggy impression, “Can you do you?”
Most unfortunate use of a great makeover: Linsay may have Linda Evangelista’s hair, but Linda would never forget to look at the camera.
Most upsetting blockage of Belgian design: Maryam doesn’t notice when the male model walks in front of the Dries.
And the Oscar goes to: Jeanne Beker does an “actress” face and then whips out an impression of Heather’s Minnie Mouse voice. Beker, you are on!
Photo of the week: Nikita (hopefully this came with the stipulation that she stop complaining about her hair)

Miley’s gone blonde and Taylor’s now brunette! Which new dye job do you like best? | Hollywood yohana

In breaking hair colour news, two pop sensations with a love for country have given their locks a serious colour overhaul over the past couple days.
Recently engaged Miley Cyrus tweeted a phone-snapped pic of her new blonde tresses, along with the message “Now that I’m blonde I gotta give duck lips in every photo” (we have no idea what that could possibly mean). The Hannah Montana star also shed a few inches, giving her locks a fresh departure from the long, auburn style she’d been wearing over the past year.
The real surprise is Taylor Swift, though: the country singer has been as associated with her shimmering blonde curls as she is with her famously candid songs, so new Cover Girl campaign images of the country star as a brunette (well, dirty blonde but still verging on brunette territory) are pretty shocking. Though the behind-the-scenes video seems to show Swift with lighter hair (leading us to believe that her hair may have been darkened in the images post-production), we’ll have to wait until she takes to the red carpet to see how dark she really went. Either way, it’s another step away from her “country cutie” look and a sign that she’s continuing on her sleeker image makeover.

Dakota Fanning debuts vampy, dark-brown hair on the Twilight red carpet| Hollywood yohana

Dakota Fanning dark brown hair at the Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part 2 Premiere

Fitting that she was at the premiere of a vampire movie last night, as Dakota Fanning’s new dark hair colour was right in theme.
The actress was in Los Angeles for the world premiere of The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn: Part 2 and stunned fans as she walked down the red carpet with a new dark-brown hair colour.
However, the switch isn’t a personal preference. Dakota Fanning assured Yahoo! Movies that her new hair colour is for an upcoming role, saying, “…for the character I was playing I couldn’t be a blonde.” Fanning also said her choice of dress “was totally dependent on my hair colour” and the teal Elie Saab Couture gown definitely seemed to work in her favour. Fanning completed the look with a Ferragamo minaudière and Charlotte Olympia heels.
And as we know, good fashion genes seem to run in the family, as Dakota’s sister Elle Fanning was also on hand last night to support her sister. The younger Fanning (who is still blonde) stepped out on the Twilight red carpet in a look fresh from the Prada Spring 2013 runway. Despite their four-year age difference, if we squint at Dakota it’s quite easy to imagine Elle as a brunette as well—perhaps she should dye her hair too in sister solidarity?

Would you rent a nail polish? Lacquerous lets you borrow the newest luxury colours at a fraction of the cost | Hollywood yohana

Lacquerous Rent nail polishes

From companies like Rent Frock Repeat—which lets you rent high fashion dresses for short periods of time—to purse rental site Bag, Borrow, Or Steal, luxury fashion rental services are a popular way for the masses to get a taste of high fashion. But today Refinery 29 brought a new type of rental service to our attention: Lacquerous, a soon-to-launch subscription service for nail polishes.

Before you say “ick!” consider that a single bottle of high-end nail polish can cost more than $25—and unless you’re a collector-slash-hoarder, odds are you’ll only use that polish a handful of times before moving onto the next It shade. Enter Lacquerious: For $18 a month, users are sent three colours selected from a library of 70+ nail polish shades. Only high-end brands, such as Tom Ford, Dolce & Gabbana, OPI, and Chanel, are available, with just-released collections being key. After spending 30 days with the nail polishes, the user ships them back in a pre-paid envelope and waits for the next batch.
True, we were at first a little hesitant to succumb to the idea of sharing nail polishes with strangers—but you only have to watch a bottle of polish get passed around a salon to realize this happens all the time. Also Lacquerous (which is only available in the US for now) assures us that studies have been done to prove that no bacteria can live inside a bottle of nail polish. Phew.
But there are a few catches: You can only use each bottle of rented polish three times and Lacquerous monitors the amounts in each bottle (kind of creepy). That means you and all your gal pals can’t take advantage of the service! And regardless of how quickly you send back your rented colours, you have to wait 30 days between rental periods.

Rihanna makes the biggest beauty faux pas ever with a French pedicure on the red carpet | Hollywood yohana

Rihanna French Pedicure GQ Men of the Year Awards

We’ve been preparing ourselves for the return of the French manicure ever since Alexander McQueen and Chanel painted the look on nails for Fall 2012 and Spring 2013, respectively. Both brands did the French manicures on clean, short nails with just a sliver of white on the tips. The message was clear: If you want your French manicure to be on trend, leave the acrylic tips at home. (Think “Kate Middleton at a royal brunch” more than “Snooki at a baby shower.”)
Unfortunately, Rihanna—always one to experiment with nail art—took the new French manicure trend one literal step too far. Last night she walked the red carpet at the GQ Men of the Year awards in a pair of strappy sandals which showed off a French pedicure on (shudder) longer-than-average toe nails.
(We understand if you need to pause and step away from your computer after reading that. We’ll wait.)
Worst of all, the French pedicure ruined what was otherwise a stunning look. Rihanna’s glowing skin, matte red lips and cat eye liner had an old Hollywood quality to it, and side-parted, slicked back hair further complemented her makeup. And do you recognize the dress? It’s a red version of the Calvin Klein dress from that classic scene in Clueless. Perhaps Rihanna was paying further homage to the ’90s with the French pedicure, but to us it’s just unforgivable. What do you think? French pedicures, yay or nay?

Lana Del Rey updates her ’60s style with Jane Birkin-esque bangs | Hollywood yohana

Lana Del Rey Bangs

Lana Del Rey has become somewhat of a ’60s hairstyle chameleon. Whether it’s an oversized bouffant, tight curls or brushed-out waves the singer loves to experiment with her style—though always keeping it in the same decade. And now, Lana Dey Rey has added a dark-brown set of bangs to her look.
While promoting her newest album “Born To Die: The Paradise Edition” in London, the singer altered her perfectly coiffed waves with a new set of bangs, giving a Jane Birkin-esque vibe to her hairstyle. At first we thought they were a clip-in set, but the split in the middle proves that they are indeed authentic. (New bangs always annoyingly refuse to adjust their part.)
We’re curious if Lana Del Rey is taking style tips from a certain 22-year-old country singer. She and Taylor Swift were spotted becoming super pals at the MTV European Music Awards this past weekend. Swift’s ever-present fringe was paired with loose flowing curls and a smoky eye making her look one of the biggest standouts of the evening.
Some are saying that 2012 is the year of the bang and we can’t say that we disagree—we did call it as a fall trend, after all. Just last week Beyoncé debuted blunt bangs at a basketball game and Emma Stone recently showed off a revised take on long fringe. Both leading ladies wear the bangs well, but we’d have to say that Beyoncé truly pulls them off (as with most other things). Lana Del Rey, we’re eager to see how you style yours over the coming weeks.

Fashion DIY: 6 easy steps to creating your own embellished Marni fur collar | Hollywood yohana

Fashion DIY Marni Fur Collar

On the bright side, late fall is finally the time to break out those cozy furs and even cozier faux furs. What better time then, to turn our Fashion DIY attentions to the inimitable (well, we’ll see about that) fur collar that’s become such a staple as of late. On Marni’s Fall 2012 runway, designer Consuelo Castiglioni upped her quirky ante with several takes on the collar trend, this time bejewelling them with bright and graphic floral patterned beads.

With fall being the season to free your cozy furs from their long summer rest inside your closet, Marni’s Fall 2012 embellished fur collar became a quick favourite. This new twist on the fall staple gives even the simplest of outfits a Baroque edge. With a retail price of $1,980 we give our take on it for under $50. And with holiday party season just around the corner, it seems the DIY fur collar seems like the quintessential bargain accessory.

Wearing your winter coat: 9 Style Panel tips on how to complete your look, even with the bulk | Hollywood yohana

Wearing Your Winter Coat Style Panel

The ladies of our Style Panel have started to help you ease into your winter wardrobe by showing you how to layer for the season, and ease into more weather-friendly boots. This week, they have taken on the daunting challenge how to pair a winter jacket with the rest of your outfit, while still maintaining some style.
Whatever your personal taste or style, the coat options this season are truly endless. Labels including Acne and Haider Ackermann took some cues from menswear and sent oversized coats down respective Fall 2012 runways. If bigger is not better for you, there are many more choices including coats that incorporate trends such as quilted leather and leopard print, as seen on Alexandra Nikolajev.
And what would a post about coats be without mentioning the cape, which Gucci did a stylish version of for its Fall 2012 collection. The cape keeps you warm and doesn’t constrict your arms, but if you’re wary about trying one for yourself, take a cue from Style Panel member Christina Cravero, who wears an Adrienne Vittidani cape in this week’s post. She ensures that a cape is not bulky and can be layered over top of other items, ensuring maximum warmness on a chilly day. So if you’re daring, maybe try a cape this season. If not, you can still take advice from our Style Panel members and see how they plan on styling their coats this winter.

Toronto Fashion Week Spring 2013 backstage beauty: Dewy, metallic skin and crimped Venice Beach hair at Chloé Comme Parris | Hollywood yohana

Chloe Comme Parris Spring 2013 backstage beauty

It was dewy skin like we’ve never seen before for Chloé Comme Parris Spring 2013, where the theme was California’s Venice Beach and models looked like they’d just emerged from the water. “It’s all about layering different kinds of textures to create this really beautiful, metallic skin,” explained M.A.C makeup key Melissa Gibson. To start, she used M.A.C Cosmetics Mineralize Charged Water Face and Body Lotion ($40, ) followed by Studio Finish SPF 35 Concealer ($22, )—though dabbed only where necessary. The almost supernatural glow, however, came courtesy of Mineralize Skinfinish in “Soft and Gentle” ($34, ) which Gibson generously applied with a brush “literally all over the face.” “Gorgeous Gold” and “Nylon” eyeshadow ($18, ) brought some brightness to the eyes, with a focus on applying pigment at the inner corners for a glowing highlight. Lips were lightly painted with dusty-pink “Please Me” lipstick ($18, ), mixed with a bit of concealer as to slightly mute the colour. And because the makeup was all about looking gorgeous after a day at the beach, Melissa Gibson brushed Gloss Texture (available at M.A.C Cosmetics Pro stores only) into the lashes to mimic the effect of water, foregoing mascara completely. The Gloss Texture was also liberally dabbed on the side of the face and the nose providing both a touch of shine and completing the fresh, dewy texture.
It was almost impossible to not guess Venice Beach as Chloé Comme Parris’ inspiration after seeing the long, wavy hair, which was styled by Charise Bauman, lead hair stylist for Aveda Institute Toronto. After giving a bit of grip and volume with Aveda Pure Abundance Style Prep ($24, ) Bauman set the hair in tiny loose braids, using a very clever technique to secure each one without the telltale pinch that hair elastics can leave behind: “We backcombed [each braid] with a fine-toothed comb,” she explained. To keep as much of the crimped texture in the hair when removing the braids, Charise Bauman brushed each one out with a paddle brush instead of unraveling it and further disguised the straight unbraided ends with a quick twist of the flatiron. One braid remained—which was used to pull the hair back into a deep side part—and Aveda Air Control hair spray ($24, ) finished the look, chosen for its matte texture and light hold.

Toronto Fashion Week Spring 2013 backstage beauty: It’s all about aerodynamic hair and makeup at Sid Neigum | Hollywood yohana

Sid Neigum backstage beauty makeup Spring 2013

“It’s more about a mood than a theme,” said M.A.C makeup key Melissa Gibson of the beauty look for Sid Neigum’s Spring 2013 show. Featuring a strong eyebrow, smoky eyes and matte skin, Gibson referenced Helmut Newton and “Cindy Crawford in the ’90s” as inspiration. “It’s not just a heavy black smoky eye…there’s an edge to it, the fleck of grey metallic in there brightens it up for spring and summer.” To build this graphic-yet-soft look, she used a mix of three M.A.C eyeshadows–“Carbon,” “Print” and “Typographic” ($18 each, )—diffusing the pigment across the eye and blending out any straight lines. Fluidline eyeliner in “Blacktrack” ($18, ) was also diffused at the lashline and lashes were curled and given two coats of mascara for extra drama. But it was two winged-out lines across the brows that completed the look, which was a last minute addition from Gibson: “At the end I threw on that eyebrow and that did it!”
Equally aerodynamic was the hair, which was pulled back in a low ponytail and covered with a nylon stocking headwrap. “I don’t know if we’ve actually developed an official term—I want to refrain from calling it a doo-rag!” said Charise Bauman, lead hair stylist for Aveda Institute Toronto. She prepped the sleek look by applying Aveda Light Elements Smoothing Fluid ($27,) to wet hair and blowdrying throughout. Quarter-inch sections of hair were flatironed to further polish the look and then the hair was secured in a tight ponytail at the nape of the neck. Nylon stockings—“Just your basic girls’ nylon stocking!”—were deconstructed, wrapped around the head and tied to the ponytail. The final step was disguising the ends of the stocking by wrapping a section of hair over it. While this hair-around-the-hair-elastic trick is nothing new, Bauman offered a tip to make it absolutely foolproof: “I think when women have short layers it can be hard to get that extra bit of hair [to wrap], so I take that subsection first, wrap it around a quarter-inch curling iron and then [hair] spray it in place—sometimes you don’t even need to use [bobby] pins!”

Toronto Fashion Week Spring 2013 backstage beauty: A twisted hair and modern take on ’70s makeup at Jeremy Laing | Hollywood yohana

Jeremy Laing Spring 2013 backstage beauty hair makeup

While the details on Jeremy Laing’s Spring 2013 collection echoed the ’90s, the beauty was tinged with elements from the ’70s. “Jeremy wanted the girls to look really handsome and sort of have this ’70s-eqsue feeling,” explained Greg Wencel, Cover Girl makeup pro. Also at play was a mix of textures: glossy eyelids contrasted with matte skin, which had been prepped with Cover Girl + Olay Simply Ageless Serum Primer ($18, ) to keep shine at a minimum. Instead of eyeshadow, Wencel used Cover Girl Cheekers blush in “Iced Cappuccino” and “smoked it out on the eye and under the eye socket.” He then used the same blush to sculpt a high cheek bone but diffused it for a soft, modern effect. Because lashes and brows were left bare Wencel added some dimension to the eye with Cover Girl LiquilineBlast in “Brown Blaze” ($10, ), but applied it by putting the product on the back of his hand and picking up some of the pigment with a fluffy brush. The final step was glossing up the eye with a dab of clear Cover Girl WetSlicks lip gloss ($7, ) for what Wencel called “a ’70s high gloss shine.”

The balance between the ’70s and the ’90s continued with the hair, which featured a low ponytail, a deep side part and three cornrow braids—which were actually twisted strands of hair. For grip and texture Justin German, Pantene Pro-V consulting stylist, used a mix of Sebastian Shine Crafter Moldable Wax ($19, at salons) and Pantene Pro-V Normal to Thick Smooth Definition Gel ($7, ) before twisting two stands of hair together to achieve the coiled effect.

Toronto Fashion Week Spring 2013: Super fresh skin and ’60s hair at Pink Tartan (plus, some pink hair too!) | Hollywood yohana

Pink Tartan Charlotte Free Spring 2013 makeup backstage beauty

The inspiration:
Grace Lee, Maybelline New York’s lead makeup artist: “We did a statement lip last season, it was all about that oxblood red lip, so [Kim Newport-Mimran] wanted to do the opposite. They look über, über fresh. Nothing about this makeup is about strong features… it’s super sheer, super pretty, super fresh.”
Jorge Joao, Redken lead stylist: “It’s playful, something out of the ’60s—like how a little girl would want to push her hair out of the way. [The hair has] natural texture and an aggressive side sweep with the pin holding it into place.”
Top tips:
- The key to dewy skin is moisturizer—and lots of it! “It’s almost like she’s marinating in it!” said Grace Lee of just how much she applied to Charlotte Free, Maybelline New York’s international spokesmodel. Lee also used Maybelline Dream Fresh BB Cream in place of foundation to add further glow and hydration.
- Don’t be afraid to blend two products to create the perfect hue: both the blush and lip colour for Pink Tartan Spring 2013 were custom mixes of pink and taupe shades.
- Cut down on styling time by using a product that serves double duty: Joao sprayed Redken Fabricate 03 Heat-Active Texturizer before setting the hair with a 1 inch curling iron.
- Barrettes are back for Spring 2013—but two extra-long bobby pins can also keep a side-part snugly in place.

Toronto Fashion Week Spring 2013 backstage beauty: Coral lips that are more than matte at Joe Fresh | Hollywood yohana

Joe Fresh Spring 2013 backstage beauty makeup

The look:
Grace Lee, Maybelline New York’s lead makeup artist: “Joe Fresh is known for that really fresh colour. [Joe Mimran] told me that because there’s a lot of whites and metallics for spring he wanted to do a poppy colour. [The lipstick] is petty much that perfect, perfect coral.”
Jorge Joao, Redken lead stylist: “We created a low ponytail and released some of the slack to have it droop a little bit, to give it a vintage feel. And from there we added a little bit of texture on the side, to make it more ‘now’ and to give it something fresh and urban.”
Top tips:
- The Joe Fresh Spring 2013 look takes the matte lip to the next level. With direction to make it look “like the girls had been in their lipstick all day long,” Grace Lee brushed translucent powder around the lip line after applying Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids lipstick in “Vibrant Mandarin,” which helped to diffuse the colour and give it that worn-in look. “We wanted to make it look almost like chalk,” she explained.

- There was no blush used in this look, instead it was all about fresh, clean skin. To give some dimension and glow, Lee mixed clear Maybelline Baby Lips balm with Eye Studio Colour Tattoo in “Too Cool” and applied it at the inner corners of the eye, down the bridge of the nose and at the high points of the cheeks.
- Use a small brush or pencil when filling your brows—like Maybelline Define-a-Brow—for extra precision. Instead of a solid application over the entire brow, draw on individual hairs to keep it from looking too heavy-handed.
- Rather than spending time trying to craft to perfect messy ponytail, it’s easier to deconstruct a polished pony. Jorge Joao lightly tugged at pieces to loosen them, spraying Redken Fashion Work 12 Versatile Working Spray as he went to ensure proper placement.

Toronto Fashion Week Spring 2013 backstage beauty: We test drive the 1-and-a-half-inch nails at Ashtiani | Hollywood yohana

Toronto Fashion Week nail art Ashtiani Spring 2013 essie nail polish

Last season I had the chance to work backstage during Toronto Fashion Week with the team from Tips Nail Bar. This season, the tables were turned: Essie invited me to experience what it’s like to be a model (er, nail-wise, that is) by getting the look for Ashtiani Spring 2013 applied on my own nails. Rita Remark, the lead Essie nail artist for World MasterCard Fashion Week, was leading the charge backstage, working with the team from Pinky’s Nails to design and apply creative manicures for seven shows throughout the week. (That’s more than 850 nails that need to be prepped and painted beforehand!)
As soon as I arrive Rita sits me down and gets to work. After all, when you’re backstage it’s all about doing as much as possible as quickly as possible: With a dozen-plus models per show and only a few hours blocked off for hair and makeup, you’ll often find the nail techs squeezed between stations, kneeling at the models’ feet in a scramble to get every last nail finished.

Beauty magnified: Examining Lanvin’s strong yet simple Fall 2012 runway look | Hollywood yohana

Beauty magnified: Examining Lanvin’s strong yet simple Fall 2012 runway look

Alber Elbaz celebrated his 10th anniversary at Lanvin with a collection for Fall 2012 that featured bold colour, feminine silhouettes and loads of embellishment. The Lanvin beauty team—which included hairstylist Guido Palau and makeup artist Pat McGrath—accented the look with thickly lined eyes and soft hair. The result was a strong yet simple look: complexions were clean and glowing, the hair had a subtle bend and mouths were lightly dabbed with lip balm. Pat McGrath made this beauty statement all about the eyes. Inspired by the idea of a pen and ink illustration, she drew an exaggerated black wing that covered the lid and extended out. Read on as we examine the runway look for Lanvin Fall 2012 in full, complete with tips, tricks and the five products you need to try the hair and makeup at home.

Drew Barrymore rumoured to be working on a makeup line with Wal-Mart | Hollywood yohana

Drew Barrymore Wal-Mart Makeup collection

With a recent marriage and baby behind her, change seems to be what Drew Barrymore is all about these days. Today rumours have surfaced that she’s reportedly working on a makeup line for Wal-Mart.
According to WWD, the actress—who has been a Cover Girl face since 2007—will end her contract with the brand in January in order to strike out on her own in the world of cosmetics. Sources say she has been working with Intercos, an Italian supplier for color cosmetics and makeup. It will be the first time Barrymore has gone into the realm of creating cosmetics and the forthcoming line will be exclusively sold at Wal-Mart.
Lest you think her talents are only those of the acting/directing/producing kind, Drew Barrymore has worked with Lancôme in the past and served as co-creative director and model for her work with Cover Girl. She also recently collaborated with Charlotte Gainsbourg for Tommy Hilfiger—so it’s safe to say she knows a thing or two about fashion and beauty.
Here’s hoping that Drew Barrymore’s cosmetics line will include products to help us achieve the porcelain skin and red lips that she rocked throughout much of the ‘90s. And while she’s no longer a vegetarian, we do wonder if it will include an eco-friendly approach.

Robert Pattinson follows in Kristen Stewart’s footsteps: He’s signed a deal to promote perfumes with Dior | Hollywood yohana

If imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, consider Kristen Stewart to be blushing. Stewart—the face of Balenciaga’s Florabotanica—can now offer her boyfriend and fictional vampire husband, Robert Pattinson, some tips on being the face of a fragrance because he has reportedly signed a contract with Dior.
RPatz will be modeling for men’s fragrance campaigns (unlike a certain Brad Pitt we know) and a source told E! News, “Rob likes the brand.” We consider that statement has to be true because Robert wore Dior Homme while walking both the red carpets at the Teen Choice Awards and the Cannes Film Festival.
Since immortalizing himself in the Twilight saga as vampire heartthrob Edward Cullen, Robert Pattinson hasn’t signed a single celebrity endorsement deal—making this reported $12 million contract a first for his career.

Nail Corner: SpooOOOoooky Halloween nail art | Hollywood yohana

halloween nail art day of the dead skulls

The clock is ticking, and if you’re still scrambling to create a Halloween costume it may be time to switch efforts over to your nails. Halloween nail art is an ideal, last-minute way to dress up for this candy-filled holiday and there are plenty of options that take almost no time or effort to do. (Seriously!) First option: do-it-yourself decals. Sally Hansen has a complete series of Halloween-themed Salon Effects nail polish strips, meaning in less than ten minutes your fingers can go from plain to patterned. For those who are more comfortable with nail art, dress up each nail with a Day of the Dead skull, Jack-O-Lantern face or black cat. This week Nail Corner combined Halloween decals with nail art for a somewhat spooky and definitely festive manicure.

Beyonce debuts bangs and Obama hoop earrings. Stop everything! | Hollywood yohana

Beyonce Debuts Bangs and Obama Hoop Earrings

Beyonce didn’t let the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy stop her from going out with a bang(s) over the weekend in New York City.
The singer/queen of our hearts, who we’re used to seeing with many different and new hairstyles, stepped out with freshly cut bangs to accompany husband Jay Z to a Brooklyn Nets basketball game on Saturday night.
Wearing Giuseppe Zanotti heels, an Yves Saint Laurent ring and a geometric printed top and pants by Tibi, we think she’s been taking a look at some of the prints that have recently been on trend for fall.

Beyonce joins the likes of Britney Spears and Emma Stone who have also been seen recently sporting bangs. But unlike some other celebrities Queen Bey accessorized her new mod, blunt blonde fringe with some pretty awesome bling. In case you had any doubt as to whom Beyonce might be voting for in the American election tomorrow, take a closer look at the big hoops dangling from her ears. Inside the big “O” of the earrings designed by Erika Pena spell “Bama”.
She’s been wearing these for a few weeks now, and based on her past support of Barack Obama over the years, there’s no doubt in our minds that B will be voting for O come tomorrow.

Cover Girl announces DJ duo Nervo as their newest nail art spokesmodels | Hollywood yohana

Cover Girl Nervo Nail Art

Get ready to say hello to two faces that you will be seeing a lot of in the coming months. Cover Girl has announced a new addition to their ever-growing list of spokesmodels and this time it’s a two-fer: Australian DJ sister duo Nervo has just been signed to represent the global beauty brand in promotional and digital campaigns.
With this announcement, it seems that Cover Girl is making a calculated move away from adding well-known faces to their roster and instead focusing on up-and-coming talent. The Nervo girls may not have the same name recognition as the brand’s other ambassadors (which includes Taylor Swift, Queen Latifah and Sofia Vergara, to name a few) but that’s likely about to change. Aside from releasing their own music, Nervo has worked with top talent like Miley Cyrus, Kylie Minogue and The Pussycat Dolls and they have a DJ residency in Las Vegas. Nervo also toured with Britney Spears and Nicki Minaj on the Femme Fatale tour.
It’s definitely an edgy choice for Cover Girl, and one we’re eager to watch unfold: Nervo’s first job will be to promote the launch of Cover Girl Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Gloss with—what else?—a series of nail art designs. Considering just how colourful the campaign’s first ad is, we can’t wait to see what Nervo nail art will look like.

Missoni for Holt Renfrew: We meet Margherita Missoni in New York to discuss her charitable collaboration | Hollywood yohana

Missoni for Holt Renfrew
Margherita Missoni could teach lessons in cool. The eldest grandchild (and heiress) of the family behind Italian luxury house Missoni clashes prints like a pro, pulls off turbans with panache and finds the sexy in floor-grazing skirts. When she arrives at the luxe event space at the Bowery Hotel on New York’s Lower East Side, she is relaxed, polite and somewhat quiet, though her presence seems to fill the large room. Dressed in a white T-shirt, pastel Missoni knit trousers, heeled boots and a quirky mix of jewellery—gold drop earrings in the shape of fish (she’s a Pisces), a Louis Vuitton collar necklace and several bracelets, ranging from antique diamonds to traditional Indian beads—the 29-year-old accessories designer admits she has only one prized possession: “My wedding ring.”
Two weeks before our interview for her Holt Renfrew collaboration, Missoni married 27-year-old Italian race-car driver Eugenio Amos in Brunello, Italy. Her dress, a heavenly cloud of organza, embroidery and floral appliqués, was made by “the women who saw me growing up,” she tweeted after the media incorrectly ID’d it as Missoni. Her friend Giambattista Valli provided “couture counselling.” In true cool-girl style, she swapped her tiara and white gown for a gypsy-inspired daisy chain and a blush-coloured version of her wedding dress for the countryside reception. In lieu of gifts, she asked guests to make a donation to OrphanAid Africa, a non-profit organization that helps children and their families through education, health care, family support and basic infrastructure programs. The newly minted Mr. and Mrs. generated over $80,000 in donations.
